Away from the big catwalks, a new wave of Greek fashion designers
is shaking up the international fashion world. "We
love being in Athens," says 33-year-old Vasso
Konsola, an up-and-coming designer whose modern tailoring
treads a perfect line between haute couture and pret a porter. "It
stimulates you like no other place."
The new generation of Greek designers is convinced it can
do anything it wants. "People here are not afraid
to do their own thing" says Konsola. This confidence
is paying off: designers such as Deux Hommes, Sofia
Kokosalaki, and Angelos Fretzos are making
headlines around the world. Many have won international recognition,
and been approached to take over as head designers of fashion
houses around the world.
