Christos Toskos , a municipal councillor of the lakeside town of Kastoria and a member of the Greek Ornithological Society , sounds elated. As a result of local ecologists' initiatives, a new wild bird and animal sanctuary has opened. Flanked by birch-covered mountains and lakeside wetlands where the endangered Pygmy Cormorant finds shelter during winter, Kastoria is a natural haven for wildlife. In the sanctuary's temporary premises at the municipal medical centre, two golden eagles and a wounded falcon have already been successfully treated. They were later released into the wild.
