Q & A with Eleni Koroneou

Athenian Gallery Owner Speaks

How do you feel that Greek contemporary art will develop in the future?

The future is definitely brighter for contemporary Greek art. People are more open-minded and more receptive towards international movements. The outlook is very positive.

What do you feel is the future of contemporary Greek art outside Greece?

That issue is more problematic. There is no concerted effort to promote Greek art abroad, or to establish a Greek presence at international fairs - something that other small countries like Austria have achieved. As yet, in Greece, the politics of the art world are embryonic.

What are the aims of the Eleni Koroneou Gallery?

To promote young international and Greek artists. I don't believe art is restricted by national boundaries. We exhibit up-and-coming Greek artists along with well-established foreign ones. So visitors to the gallery - especially those from abroad - give the young Greek artists a second look.

How do you feel the creation of a Modern Art Museum will affect the Greek art scene?

The creation of a Modern Art Museum is crucial. There is no other way to create a truly educated public with broad horizons. I am very optimistic about the future.
